Six SJCS sailors took part in the Schools Regatta in the Under 11 and Under 13 category in Weymouth on 26 May. The school has taken part in this event for the past five years and, as the IAPS sailing competition was cancelled, Millfield Prep School in conjunction with the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre organised the regatta for budding Under 11s and 13s. In total, 21 boats competed over four races in light winds but beautiful sunshine in Portland Harbour, including Millfield, Clifton College and Durlston Court Prep School. The SJCS pairs enjoyed some excellent results including: 5th overall, 10th overall and 13th overall.
The boats were provided by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre with the children sailing in RS Zests. The races were all held in Portland Harbour with all rescue cover provided for all participants. There was a maximum of four races sailed on the day with three races to count including some back to back races with the children being out on the water for up to three hours without coming ashore.
In usual circumstances, the SJCS sailors would have had the opportunity to train together but the crews went out to practise in their own time this year prior to the sailing event. Mrs Nikki Taylor, Sailing co-ordinator and Head of Girls' Games, commented, "The children were well-prepared and listened well to tactics and advice before taking to the water. I was very impressed with their sailing skills in such light and tricky conditions." One of the sailors said, "It was a fantastic feeling to be able to put our skills into use and to actually return to competing again on the water."
