In the first week back at school three teams of superb scientists made up of pupils from Year 5 and 6 took part in the online Inter-School National Science Quiz Championship heats. The competition was fierce with a number of schools from all over the country competing to show off their knowledge. Both Year 5 teams made it to the Finals after battling for 1st and 3rd places respectively. The top 10 teams from each Area Heat are invited to take part in the National Finals which will take place next term online.

A range of topics was tested from the largest moon in space to the tiniest sub-atomic particles, but the children were confident and articulate with their answers and collaborated well, making sure every member of the team participated. Science teacher, Miss Rachel Brunning, explained, ‘This event is an exciting approach to motivating, inspiring and encouraging children in their search for knowledge and providing them with the opportunity to celebrate their achievements as part of a high profile, national competition.’

The annual National Years 5 and 6 (Forms 3 and 4) Science Championship is an exciting and challenging way for children to broaden their scientific knowledge as well as for young scientists to showcase their abilities as part of a team representing the School. From the solar system to the smallest creatures on earth, from inventions that transform the world to the science of everyday lives, the Quiz encourages participants to explore science in a fascinating, engrossing and educational way. More than 400,000 children take part in these Championships annually, making them one of the largest inter-school competitions in the UK.
